Dolly Rebecca Parton
Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January
19, 1946 in Pittman Center, Tennessee and raised in Sevierville, Tennessee to
Avie Lee Parton, who was a housewife and Robert Lee Parton, a tobacco farmer.
She was on Knoxville TV at 12 years old. At 13, she had a recording contract
with a small label, and was singing at the Grand Ole Opry. After having
graduated from the high school in 1964, she relocated to Nashville for the
start of her country-singing career. She became a fan of Carl Dean, who ran an
asphalt-paving business. They were married on May 30th June, 1966, and they are
still together. Porter Wagoner saw her singing and invited her to appear on The
Porter Wagoner Show (1961). She remained on The Porter Wagoner Show for seven
years. Their duets were well-known and she was asked to appear with him at the
Grand Ole Opry. Her hit "Joshua", which reached #1 in 1970 was her
biggest hit single. She chose to go solo although she recorded duets with the
singer. She was no longer with him and became a solo artist in 1974. Dolly
became a huge hit as a singer/songwriter. Dolly was awarded numerous Country
Music Association awards (1968-1971, 1971, 1975-1976, 1975-1976). The petite
(5'0") beauty was a perfect fit for television. The mid-1970s saw her
becoming a regular on TV. she was appearing regularly on TV specials, talk
shows, and before having her own Dolly (1976). In 1977, Dolly got her first
Grammy award: Best Female Country Vocal Performance for her hit song "Here
You Come Again." Dolly made her film debut in 9 to 5, the year 1980. The
film was nominated for an Oscar for the title song along with Grammy Awards
2/3: Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. The movie
gained her more recognition for being in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982),
and in Rhinestone (1984) with the track "Tennessee Homesick Blues".
Dolly Parton Enterprises is her media empire that is worth $100 million. In
1986, she founded Dollywood in the form of a Tennessee theme park located in
Pigeon Forge. This was in celebration of her Smoky Mountain upbringing. She was
in the Dolly (1987) TV series. In 1988, she received another Grammy: Best
Country Performance Duo or Group with Vocals, for "Trio".
